Samaritan House provides short term recuperative care in a home like setting for men and women experiencing homelessness. We provide our guests clean bedrooms, bath facilities, nutritious meals and transportation to appointments.
Samaritan House is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 grass-roots agency. We accept no funding from local, state or federal agencies and we are not affiliated with a specific religion or hospital nor do we ask for any financial contribution from our guests. We are solely funded by donations from the local faith community, private individuals and through grants from charitable foundations.
Samaritan House uses a medical referral system. Local medical facilities (hospitals, hospital ED's, etc.) refer a patient to us and after a complete background check and other review, we then are able to accept a patient as a guest if bed space is available. Samaritan House utilizes this system on a first come-first serve basis as we are not able to maintain a "waiting list".
Our goal is provide a safe place for people who are experiencing homelessness to recuperate from illness or injury. By doing this, we not only care for those who need help, but we also help reduce the cost to the community by preventing repeat hospitalization and improving medical outcomes for indigent patients.
As each guest is unique and each need is unique, the length of stay is as well. Generally 7-10 days is initial and the maximum length of stay is 45 days the average stay is about 17 days. Each guests length of stay is determined by their individual medical aftercare needs. Generally as each guest has a unique medical condition and based upon the medical condition including rehab, doctor appointments and after care the length of stay is determined by that need as well as how each guest follows our program policy.
Absolutely yes. In our first 17 years (since 2005), we have provided recuperative care for more than 1,750 guests. Of those guests, 80% of them DID NOT return to the hospital, the street or the shelter. Accounting for more than 38,500 bed days, most of our guests go to their own place, with family or friends, move to permanent housing or into other social services programs such as treatment programs.
We have great volunteer opportunites for individuals and groups. Please visit our "Volunteer" page for more information. You can also donate to our program. For more information on donating, please visit our "Donation" page on how to donate.
Our budget is approximately $270,000.00 per year of which 88% goes directly into providing for our guests.
