Samaritan House is a short-term recuperative medical respite for individuals that are experiencing unstable housing. Medical respite care fills a service gap between hospitals and shelters. We provide a safe place to recover with medical monitoring and support services including healthy snacks and meals, laundry, transportation, medication management, medical and housing case management.
Samaritan House is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 agency. We are funded by donations from the local faith community, private individuals, special events and foundations.
Referrals for guests are made by hospital social workers, physicians, community health and supportive housing organizations. Using an online referral form, staff responds to referrals in 24 hours.
All potential guests are screened for criminal history and the referring social worker is interviewed to ensure the guest is suitable for group living.
Guests must have a medical reason that will not allow them to return to the shelter or streets for recuperation and must be able to perform activities for daily living (bathing, manage medications).
Primary goals are to reduce recidivism to hospitals, reduce pain and suffering, and increase positive health outcomes.
We have a goal to serve over 150 guests per year.
Each guest length of stay is determined by their individual medical aftercare needs. Generally as each guest has a unique medical condition and based upon the medical condition including rehab, doctor appointments and after care the length of stay is determined by that need as well as how each guest follows our program policy. The average guest stay is 14 days.
